"The population of Mali was approximately 11.7 million in 2005. Sixty-five per cent of the population is under 25 years of age, and 73 per cent of the population lives in rural areas. Life expectancy at birth is 62.2 years for women and 58.8 years for men. The annual population growth rate is 2.9 per cent, and the population doubles every 24 years. Sixty-three per cent of Malians live below the poverty line, and 22 per cent live in extreme poverty." |
