Miss Prism was Jack's "nanny" and a keen writer. During a moment of mental confusion she took the baby Jack from his pram and put it into her handbag; she placed her novel into the pram and continued her walk. The bag with the baby was left in the toilet of a railway station and later found by Jack's future foster father.
